What is Mind on the Pitch?

Mind on the Pitch is a pitch-based mental skills training programme designed to help young footballers learn how to guide themselves under pressure.This is not classroom psychology.
This is not motivational talking.
It’s football-based learning that develops self-awareness, confidence, emotional management and focus — inside real game situations, and it integrates an active role of families.

Because the mind, like the body, can be trained.

Why this age matters (11-14)

  • Thinking becomes more reflective

  • Emotions become stronger and harder to manage

  • Confidence becomes fragile and result-dependent

  • Social pressure and comparison increase

In football, this often shows as emotional reactions after mistakes, loss of focus under pressure, and reliance on sideline guidance.

Talent isn’t the issue. Mental skills just aren’t trained early enough.

Mind on the Pitch develops mental skills through football actions, not through explanations.Players learn by playing, reflecting briefly, and re-applying immediately — exactly how learning sticks.

The programme structure

The programme runs over 3 progressive pitch-based sessions, delivered every two weeks.Each session focuses on one key mental skill and provides simple tools players can use immediately in games and training.

SESSION 1 — CONFIDENCE & SELF-AWARENESS

Main focus:

Who am I as a player?

Players learn:

  • recognise their strengths and resources

  • understand their role and identity on the pitch

  • separate self-worth from results and mistakes

  • explore what a growth mindset is

Tools introduced:

  • strength awareness prompts

  • identity-based reflection questions

  • confidence anchored in self-knowledge

SESSION 2 — EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT

Main focus:

How do I manage myself under pressure?

Players learn:

  • notice emotions and inner dialogue

  • recognise emotional triggers

  • reset quickly after mistakes

  • take ownership of their response

Tools introduced:

  • pause–reset routines

  • inner dialogue awareness

  • mistake recovery strategies

SESSION 3 — FOCUS & GROWTH MINDSET

Main focus:

Where do I place my attention and control?

Players learn:

  • recognise distractions

  • focus on what they can control

  • stay present in the game

  • make calmer, clearer decisions

Tools introduced:

  • control vs no control framework

  • attention-reset cues

  • task-focus prompts

Parents & carers involvement

Parents are part of the process, not spectators.

  • practical reflection tools

  • transfer prompts to use at home

  • live online sessions with Graziano

  • space for questions and shared learning
